Nikon Metrology announces the release of the DS-Fi3 microscope camera and the DS-L4 camera control unit in the Digital Sight series. The Digital Sight series has gained a strong reputation amongst universities and laboratories in the medical and biological fields as well as industrial R&D and inspection sites. The DS-Fi3 introduces high-resolution color imaging, high sensitivity, low noise, high-speed live display and excellent colour reproducibility. It is presented alongside the DS-L4 tablet-type compact camera control unit optimized for ease-of-use, succeeding the DS-L3.
High-resolution color imaging & excellent color reproducibility with DS-Fi3.
The new DS-Fi3 is a drastically improved digital camera for microscopes. It integrates existing functions from predecessors including “High-resolution colour camera head DS-Fi2”, “High-resolution cooled camera head Fi1c” & “High-speed colour camera head Vi1”.
The DS-Fi3 Microscope Camera is equipped with the 5.9 megapixel CMOS image sensor. This enables the capture of high-resolution images of up to 5.9 megapixels (2880 x 2048 pixels).

The DS-Fi3 is equipped with the colour reproducibility algorithm involved with the advanced model DS-Ri2 which allows capturing of images in colours equivalent to that of the observed sample.
Smooth focusing and selection of observation locations
The new DS-FI3 camera joins the DS-Ri2 camera in using the latest USB3.0 connection, allowing the camera to be easily connected to any modern PC or laptop, without the need for any further hardware. It does this whilst giving higher quality images, exceptional colour representation and a higher frame rate than its predecessors.
The DS-Fi3 performs live display at 30 fps (1440 x 1024 pixels) due to the high-speed data readout achieved with the CMOS image sensor and USB3.0 connection to the PC. This represents an increase of almost double from the previous model, the DS-Fi2, which performs live display at a frame rate of 18fps (1280x 960 pixels). Because of its fast live image display, focusing and selection of observation locations can be performed smoothly.

Compared with the previous models (DS-Fi2/Fi1c/Vi1), the DS-Fi3 has a significantly higher quantum efficiency (improved double) and lower readout noise. With its low noise circuit design, sensitivity equivalent to from ISO 50 to ISO 3200 can be set, allowing it to capture clear images with less noise in the bright field as well as in fluorescence observation.
Camera control unit incorporated
The DS-Fi3 incorporates the camera control unit and does not require a separate camera control unit for its connection to PC, as is the case with the DS-Ri2/Qi2.
Also as an option the DS-L4 can be selected and create standalone set without PC. The idea of the compact design derives from the DS-L3, but with improved visibility thanks to the wider tablet display. It allows the user to easily configure and control the DS-Fi3 and attached Nikon microscopes and can be smoothly controlled with the multi-touch screen.
In addition to providing advanced imaging capabilities, these products also offer space-saving and remote access solutions for labs. The DS-Fi3 and DS-L4 tablet interface eliminate the need for a computer-based workstation by giving users the powerful ability to share live images directly over a Wi-Fi network from the secure camera hardware or save images to a shared network drive. Remote users can also log in from a common browser, Android tablet, or iPad to view live display, perform camera control and store or download images.
